Why Do You Need to Learn About Teams?
Everyone working in innovation knows that cross-functional teams lead to more successful new product launches. Yet, most of struggle with how to actually implement a cross-functional team. After all, engineers speak a different language than marketers, and the finance folks seem to have very different goals than the legal representatives on the team. How can a cross-functional team really work for new product development (NPD)?
Building an effective cross-functional NPD team is a process. You can’t just throw together a group of people from different departments, give them deadline, and except magic to happen. Productive teams are nurtured through a growth process, starting with team member self-awareness. Then teams mature through self-management and relationship awareness. Finally, team members become effective by creating habits and processes that support cohesiveness yielding successful innovation outcomes.
