Why Do You Need to Learn About Teams?
Everyone working in innovation knows that cross-functional teams lead to more successful new product launches. Yet, most of struggle with how to actually implement a cross-functional team. After all, engineers speak a different language than marketers, and the finance folks seem to have very different goals than the legal representatives on the team. How can a cross-functional team really work for new product development (NPD)?
Building an effective cross-functional NPD team is a process. You can’t just throw together a group of people from different departments, give them deadline, and except magic to happen. Productive teams are nurtured through a growth process, starting with team member self-awareness. Then teams mature through self-management and relationship awareness. Finally, team members become effective by creating habits and processes that support cohesiveness yielding successful innovation outcomes.
Steps in Building an Effective Cross-Functional Team include
- Team member self-awareness (based on the Everything DiSC® Workplace Assessment)
- Managing team behaviors (based on the Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team® Personal and Team Profiles)
- Innovation team processes (based on the Team Dimensions Profile)
- Ensuring strategic alignment (based on Situational Team Leadership)
- Working with dispersed teams (based on Virtual Team Model)
In this Q&A Webinar, we will be covering Steps 3 through 5 as Part 2. You will have already learned in Part 1 how individual team members’ self-awareness helps them to use a common vocabulary to understand work style preferences and how teams need a foundation of trust to engage in healthy conflict and debate of ideas. As teams begin to understand one another and initiate open conversations, you will learn to improve the productivity of teams by recognizing strengths of team members’ work styles at different phases of a project life cycle. Teams also create better results when they agree on a team charter that is aligned with the organizational strategy for innovation. Finally, many of us work with dispersed teams and we will cover some tips and tools for dispersed teams using the Virtual Team Model from Leveraging Innovation Constraints (Wiley, 2018).
